Adopting a Pet While On Vacation

February 5, 2014

G’Day Mates, World Pet Adoption Marshall, Sydney here.  (Ahem, self appointed, that is).

I’m here to tell you about a bonza idea (that’s terrific, Aussie style).  Adopting an orphan dog or cat while on vacation.

Now as we all know, adopting a pet is serious business and not to be done on the fly, as it were.  But if you and/or your family has been seriously considering adding a new member to the family,  and you’re off to an exotic land, there are plenty of dogs & cats around the world in need of loving homes.

For example.

Puerto Rico
Homeless dogs are referred to as Satos and Sato Project and Save a Sato send dogs to America, either to homes or no-kill shelters.  You can adopt directly from them or from a popular shop that has an affiliation with the organization--the Mango Beach Shop in Rincon.

St. Thomas
The Humane Society here has been active since 1967 and have only recently been adopting to statesiders.  This island paradise is actually part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, which means there is no special paperwork necessary for the adoption process.  If you adopt from the Humane Society of St. Thomas the only requirements are a health certificate which clears the dog to fly and about a $100 or so fee for vaccinations.  And it just gets better. If you adopt from the Humane Society, pets fly FREE to their forever homes on American Airlines.  The HS even loans you a carrier!

The Bolongo Bay Beach Resort offers adoptive pet parents a 30% discount on ocean-view and ocean-front rooms on stays five days or longer.

Turks & Caicos
You can “borrow a dog” for the day and take it to the beach at the Potcake Place.   And it’s working.  The shelter adopts 500-600 dogs off the island each year.

Aspen, Colorado
Has the same kind of borrow a dog program.  The adoption process is easy and straightforward.  $100 covers the cost of neutering, vaccine and microchips.  (that’s a DEAL).  The shelter adopts around 300 dogs a year through this program.

New York City
Le Parker Meridien will discount your room 20% if you adopt from the city’s ASPCA.  Kimpton’s 79 park avenue hotel will throw in a complimentary visit to a groomer including a bath, trim and mini-massage.

There are too many adoption programs to include here.  However, if you are considering adding a forever new member to your family, call ahead.  Check with the local shelters about borrowing programs and paperwork.  Ask your hotel and airline about pet adoption discount programs.  You may be pleasantly surprised at how accommodating everyone in the adoption chain can be.

There are thousands of homeless pets all over the world.  One of them is just waiting for you. pz
